Devil May Cry - A Genre defining game

Image
The year was 1999, the new generation of consoles was upon and CAPCOM was trepidatious about opening it with a bang. Thus, Hideki Kamiya was put at the helm of their new big release… Resident Evil 4 ! Surprised? Most likely not. For those of you who’ve never heard this story before, Resident Evil 4’s story is a lengthy and arduous tale filled with: discarded prototypes, change of both directions and people at the helm of the production. Its gestation period lasted for 6 whole years, the game was meant to open on the Playstation 2 and Nintendo Gamecube, but barely managed to come out before the generation ended. But what’s the correlation between Resident Evil and Devil May Cry? Kamiya’s idea for Resident Evil 4 was to put more focus on the action rather than the horror. Your main character, Tony, was going to fight his enemies with stylish action thanks to his enhancements with Biotechnology, in a much more gothic scenario rather than the urban streets of a post-apocalyptic city. If t...

Van Helsing (2004) - The best Castlevania movie ever made

Image
During the 90s there was an attempt by Hollywood to capitalize on the popularity of videogames with various videogame adaptations: Super Mario, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, just to name a few. These efforts are still ongoing to this day, with an ever expanding list that, unfortunately, rarely manage to give us actual quality products. Movie adaptations of videogames have always fascinated me, it’s always a morbid curiosity of mine to see how a story could be adapted to the big screen, how much they can miss the target, or maybe, discover some hidden gems! With time I grew passionate about some of these, in spite of their warts and how lousy the final product might be. Basically the kind of movies you would describe as “So bad its good” Without a doubt one of the big absences from these adaptations was Castlevania , and I really cannot fathom a reason why they never took a chance about turning it into a movie. Might be because of the many Dracula movies of the past? The f...

Van Helsing (2004) - Il miglior film di Castlevania mai fatto

Image

Dear me, I was… - A look back into our life

Image
I’ve talked a lot about Cing in my Another Code Recollection blog, about how this company really stuck with me and about my hope that someday their former employees could finally come back to create new stories. My hopes have finally been fulfilled with the announcement of Dear me, I was… during the Arc System Works showcase of last July. Maho Taguchi and Taisuke Kanasaki are here together to give us a new and more peculiar adventure than usual: we have a textless adventure game, completely helmed by the artistic prowess of Kanasaki. He adopts his well known rotoscoped approach, that was used already in Hotel Dusk. Taguchi, in her directorial debut, has described the game as such: “It’s designed for adult women, aiming to help you feel a bit more positive after playing it.” When this was announced I was elated ! I always felt that games like Another Code, for as much of a cult following they garner, can rarely drive up a lot of interest. I feared the recent remake would be just ano...

Dear me, I was…

All’annuncio ero euforico !

Another Code Recollection - A completely unexpected remake

Image
Have you ever walked into the videogame store, mindlessly dug into the used game box and instinctively bought a game that you never heard of but it had something in the cover that caught your attention? That’s exactly what happened to me when I found Last Window: The Secret of Cape West , a small investigative adventure for Nintendo DS. That was my first approach with the games made by Cing , a small Japanese software house that was founded in 1999, then closed in 2010 due to bankruptcy. Last Window was their very last game. Cing was mostly focused on adventure games, with a particular focus on the investigation genre. Last Window was a very peculiar game: I enjoyed the fact that you had to hold the DS vertically like a book, I loved the animation style which reminded me of the Take On Me music video by A Ha . The story was also very interesting: in the guise of the detective Kyle Hyde we had to discover the secrets of this apartment block, and by consequence the secrets of its inhabit...

Another Code Recollection - Un remake completamente inaspettato

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - The biggest revelation of 2025

I’ve often heard, in recent years, how the turn based RPG genre isn’t in a healthy state , how there’s always less games coming out and how everyone is trying to divert from it. Usually this sentiment came paired with Final Fantasy XVI’s switch towards action and the possible rumors of Dragon Quest XII possibly deviating from the classic turn based structure of the series. Personally I feel that sentiment is very overblown , but I also understand where people are coming from. While the genre is still extremely prolific, it’s kinda confined in a very specific niche. Games like Persona 5 and the Trails series are aimed towards a public that’s really passionate about anime aesthetic , while games like Octopath Traveler are aimed towards people that are clamoring for a return to the classic turn based 2D games of the 16-bit days. It’s easy to feel that the genre is kinda stuck in this rut, there aren’t alternatives for people who just don’t want to wallow back in nostalgia and don’t wanna ...
