Final Fantasy as a series needs no presentation. For many years it has been seen as the golden standard for the JRPG genre. My very first approach as a kid was very briefly with Final Fantasy X-2, but it was with Final Fantasy VII that I fell in love with the series. With its wonderful soundtrack, memorable characters, simple but addicting gameplay, that game started an avalanche effect that got me to play every single numbered entry in the series. If there’s something that characterized this series the most, it’s experimentation and pushing the boundaries with more mechanics and ideas, with very mixed results. That’s the price to pay sometimes with experimentation: I had my share of games that I still keep close to my heart, while others I would rather forget I’ve played them. Final Fantasy è una serie che non ha bisogno di presentazioni, e che per anni ha rappresentato per molti la punta di diamante del genere JRPG. Il mio primissimo approccio fu brevemente con Final Fantasy X-2, ma è stato Final Fantasy VII il primo capitolo che ho portato a termine per intero, e che mi ha fatto davvero innamorare della serie. Con le sue meravigliose musiche, i suoi personaggi memorabili, il gameplay semplice ma dannatamente efficace, quel gioco ha messo assieme un effetto valanga e al giorno d’oggi ho praticamente giocato ogni capitolo numerato della serie. Se c’è una cosa per cui questa serie si è sempre distinta è stata anche per la sua capacità di sperimentare e spingere sempre con nuove idee e meccaniche, con risultati che sono stati giustamente molto altalenanti. Questo è il prezzo che si rischia di pagare: io stesso ho amato con tutto il cuore dei capitoli di questa serie, e ci sono altri capitoli che desidero dimenticare . ‘Twas the year 2002 when I was gifted the VHS of “ Fellowship of the ring ”. Back then I never heard of Lord of the Rings or J.R.R. Tolkien , but I was surrounded by people who were very happy about the announcement: be them schoolmates or family friends. I was happy about the gift since at the time I was already curious about the fantasy genre. That movie had me hooked since the very beginning. The introduction caught me not only thanks to the wonderful speech by Galadriel, but also with the massive battle between Elves and Humans facing off against the army of Mordor. I immediately grew fond of the characters, terrified by creatures like the Nazgul and the Balrog, and the unexpected betrayal of Saruman kept me on edge to see who else in the fellowship might try to take the ring for themselves. When the VHS ended and I found out it was just the beginning of the story I was flabbergasted. Since then I always made it so I would see the sequels in the cinemas as soon as they came out. ...

Correva l’anno 2002 quando ricevetti in regalo la videocassetta de “ La Compagnia dell’anello ”. Ai tempi non avevo mai sentito parlare del Signore degli Anelli o di J.R.R Tolkien , ma fin dall’annuncio del film ho sentito comunque persone entusiaste tra miei compagni di scuola o amici di famiglia, che erano ben più navigati di quanto lo fossi io a quell’età. Ero parecchio curioso perché già allora avevo tantissimo interesse per il mondo fantasy, ed ero decisamente contento del regalo che avevo ricevuto. Quel film mi ha stregato fin da subito. L’introduzione mi aveva catturato non solo con la stupenda introduzione di Galadriel, ma anche con la tremenda battaglia che ha visto elfi e umani opporsi alle imponenti armate di Mordor.
